How to Use Social Media for Small Business: Simple Tips

Social media is a powerful tool for any business looking to increase its exposure. However, it can be difficult to know where to start when you are new and don't have an established social presence. That's why we've compiled the simple tips for using social media as a small business owner!

Create a Company Facebook Page

  • A company Facebook page is often the first step in building an online presence as it allows you to show your personality and brand on social media, while also driving traffic back to your website or blog!

  • Create a custom cover photo that reflects what you do best. You can even include links for more information about products/services, events they'll be attending, blog posts related to their work etcetera at no cost with this free automated tool: Hootsuite Cover Photo Creator.

  • Add up to five tabs (or pages) where visitors will learn more about your services - one for each main area of business you offer plus a general "About Us" tab if desired. Make sure people are able to see the tabs from your Facebook cover photo!

  • Keep the content on these tabs fresh, with updates at least a few times per month.

  • Add posts to both the company page and personal account so you're not duplicating efforts or sending visitors to an impersonal-looking landing page.

  • Create compelling images for each post by uploading them through Canva (free) or downloading them from Unsplash (paid). Avoid generic stock photos; they won't make people want to read what you have written in this space any more than a bland screenshot of text would. Use marketing slogans or quotes too - just be sure to cite sources when using someone else's work as intellectual property without their consent.

  • Be engaging and personable while staying professional, make your content shareable, and have a plan to get the word out.

The bottom line is that social media marketing should be a part of any business's promotion strategy because it has never been so easy for small businesses to reach such large audiences at zero cost. Now you just need to take some time every day (or week) and put in the work!

Take a couple of minutes to think about what you would want your favorite social media site to be filled with, and use that as inspiration for all of your posts.

Don't create boring screenshots or videos; take the time and really showcase who you are!

Engage others on these platforms. This includes commenting on other people's work (unless they don't allow it), sharing their posts when appropriate, thanking users for following or liking your page - basically any small gesture goes a long way! You'll also need to plan ahead by using some easy-to-use hashtags so more people can find out about your business through these channels.

Finally, consistency is the key to success with social media. 

You'll need to post at least once a day and come up with different content ideas for each platform since no one will want to read about your product or service all the time!
